What Is an ITIN?

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS for certain individuals who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).

Whether you need an ITIN — and whether you qualify for one — depends on your individual circumstances and IRS rules. Not everyone with a U.S. connection needs an ITIN, and submitting an inquiry is the best way to determine whether we can assist with your situation.

Who May Need an ITIN?

Certain nonresident or resident aliens with a U.S. tax filing or reporting requirement
Spouses or dependents of U.S. citizens, residents or other taxpayers, where applicable
Foreign individuals with U.S. tax filing or reporting requirements
Other eligible applicants under IRS rules

These are examples only. ITIN eligibility is determined by IRS rules on a case-by-case basis, and some applicants may qualify for exceptions or alternative procedures. For context on U.S. filing obligations abroad, see our guide to U.S. taxes for Americans living in Canada.

Why Work With a CAA

Certifying Acceptance Agent Services

An IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) can authenticate many eligible supporting documents as part of an ITIN application, subject to IRS rules. Where CAA authentication applies, this may allow applicants to avoid mailing certain original documents to the IRS.

Aleksandr Isakov is an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA), so eligible ITIN applicants can often have their documentation reviewed and certified directly through US CAN Tax Group, within IRS rules. See Aleksandr Isakov's profile for his full credentials.

CAA Limitations

CAA document authentication is subject to IRS rules. CAA authentication does not apply to foreign military identification cards. For dependents, CAA authentication is limited to passports and birth certificates. Other supporting documents may need to be submitted as originals or as copies certified by the issuing agency, under IRS requirements.

ITIN Applications From Outside the United States

ITIN applicants may work with an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) from outside the United States, subject to eligibility and document requirements. US CAN Tax Group works with ITIN applicants worldwide, regardless of where they live.

If you are moving between countries or have cross-border filings in addition to your ITIN application, our team also advises on cross-border business tax matters and U.S. tax services for Americans living in Andorra.
